President's Challenge Quilts

This year's President's Challenge mini quilts really sing! And with the theme of song or song title as inspiration, our members' quilts are as diverse as a record store.

You can listen to the song that inspired the quilt by clicking on the song title. It will open a new tab and take you to that song on YouTube.

Carole was inspired by Memories are Made of This [YouTube.com] to make this crazy quilt using her own design and "Razzle Dazzle" threads for embroidery:

Claudette was inspired by Partons, La Mer est Belle [YouTube.com] and from post cards from Nova Scotia to create her own design:

Doris was inspired by Miles Davis' album Kind of Blue and the songs on the album Blue in Green [YouTube.com] and All Blues [YouTube.com] to improvisationally piece this quilt in hand-dyed indigo cotton and linen:

Eva was inspired by Neil Diamond and Lulu singing The Boat that I Row [YouTube.com] and by images in a calendar to craft this hand appliqued and embellished quilt:

Helen was inspired by First Light [YouTube.com] to make a "jazz" design after she read Minimal Quiltmaking [Amazon.ca]by Gwen Marston. This is her own design:

Isabella found inspiration in Am I Blue? [YouTube.com] by Grant Clark and Harry Akst and sung by Linda Ronstadt and portraits by painter Amedeo Modigliani [Modigliani-Foundation.org] for this quilt:

Isabella was inspired by Moulin Rouge [IMDB.com] and Rufus Wainwright's version of Complainte de la Butte [YouTube.com] for this quilt:

Isabella found inspiration in k-os's song, Crabbuckit [YouTube.com] for this quilt:

Isabella found inspiration in the song Only You [YouTube.com] written by Buck Ram and performed by the Platters and the quilt Sheep Shape by Deonn Scott in Quiltmaker, May/June 2014 [Quiltmaker.com] and used English paper piecing to make her quilt:

Isabella was inspired by Les Patineurs, Opus 183 [YouTube.com] by Emile Waldteufel and by the quilt Ice Dancer by Barbara Roberts in Quilts for Girls and Boys [Amazon.ca] to make her quilt, Skater's Waltz, with thread painted trees:

Joyce was inspired by Puff the Magic Dragon [YouTube.com] for her quilt:

Joyce was inspired by Red Sails in the Sunset [YouTube.com] and from online photos of sunsets to make this quilt:

Shirley was inspired by Patsy Cline and her song I Fall to Pieces [YouTube.com] and by Jean Wells' book, Intuitive Colour and Design [YouTube.com] to try curved piecing and cutting through the piecing vertically for this quilt:

Shirley was inspired by Morning Has Broken [YouTube.com] by Cat Stevens and decided a second attempt at Jean Wells' techniques was in order for this quilt:

Shirley used Frank's concept to find inspiration in Only You [YouTube.com] by the Platters for this quilt to be used as a pillow:

Shirley was inspired by Three Little Birds [YouTube.com] by Bob Marley to keep practicing curved piecing techniques from Jean Wells to make this quilt:

Suzanne was inspired by You Are My Sunshine, [YouTube.com] whether it is sung by Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, or Johnny Cash!

Gail was inspired by Rock Around the Clock (YouTube.com), rock material, and the slightly "wonky" numbers for her quilt:
